In order to make the coupler rotate flexibly during the tipping operation, the hook body of the 16 type coupler is cylindrical, and the wear plate below the hook body is an embedded wear plate, reducing the resistance of the coupler during rotation. The contact area between the tail of the hook body and the slave plate is a spherical surface with a radius of 133.5mm.

Knuckle innovation:
In order to meet the further development of heavy load and faster speed of railway freight cars, and to improve the reliability of the coupler knuckle of 10,000 ton trains, improvements were made to the 16 type coupler knuckle in 2006, which improved the structure of the reinforcing ribs in the nose cavity of the 16 type coupler knuckle. At the same time, the number of reinforcing ribs was increased from 2 to 3, and the thickness of the middle reinforcing rib was increased from 16 mm to 24 mm; Added requirements such as no mold inclination on the traction S surface and no parting on the lock surface. The improved 16 type hook tongue has increased the strength reserve of the hook tongue nose, improved the ability of the hook tongue to resist fatigue cracks, and improved the stress concentration state of the hook tongue traction S-plane. The improved Type 16 hook tongue began in January 2007, replacing the original Type 16 hook tongue.
In October 2007, further improvements were made on the basis of the improved type 16 hook knuckles. The internal cavity structure of the hook knuckle was adjusted, and the thickness of the reinforcing rib at the nose of the hook knuckle was increased. The structural wall thickness of the internal cavity at the nose of the hook knuckle, the middle internal cavity of the hook knuckle pin hole, the hook knuckle traction table, and the impact table was also increased, further improving the strength reserve and safety reliability of the hook tongue, and better meeting the requirements of heavy-duty trains. At the end of 2007, the thickened 16 type hook tongue began to be promoted and used on newly built C80B coal gondola wagons and other railway wagons.
